Introduction
One of the biggest struggles Christians face is discerning whether something is truly from God. Is this decision, opportunity, or direction His will—or is it just my own desire? While we often look for signs that something is from God, the Bible also helps us by showing what is not from God.
Today, we will look at seven ways to recognize when something is not from God, so we can avoid deception and walk confidently in His will.
I. It’s Not from God When It Contradicts Scripture (Isaiah 8:20, 2 Timothy 3:16-17)
Isaiah 8:20 – “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 – “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
God never contradicts Himself. His voice will never tell you to do something that goes against His Word. If an idea, decision, or teaching goes against the Bible, it is not from God. This fundamental truth serves as a guiding light for believers, reminding them to continually seek divine wisdom through Scripture. When faced with choices or challenges, reflecting on biblical principles can illuminate the right path forward. It is essential to discern the source of our thoughts and inspirations, ensuring they align with the teachings of Christ. In a world filled with conflicting messages and ideologies, holding steadfast to God's Word is crucial for maintaining spiritual integrity and clarity. Thus, whenever uncertainty arises, let the Bible be our anchor, confirming that any notion contrary to its teachings is not rooted in divine truth.

- Always test what you hear or feel against Scripture, utilizing the teachings and principles found within to ensure that your understanding aligns with the truth, fostering a deeper faith and discernment in your spiritual journey.
- If a decision requires bending or ignoring biblical truth, it is not from God, as God’s guidance is always aligned with His Word, which serves as our ultimate source of wisdom and direction in all matters of life.

II. It’s Not from God When You Have to Hide It from Others (John 3:20-21, Proverbs 10:9)
John 3:20-21 – “Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light.”
Proverbs 10:9 – “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.”
If you feel the need to keep your actions, decisions, or motives secret, it’s a red flag that it’s not from God. God operates in the light, not in secrecy and deception. The truth shines brightly, illuminating the paths we should take and the choices we should make. When we choose to act in shadow, we often stray from His guidance, and the anxiety of keeping secrets can weigh heavily on our hearts. In contrast, embracing transparency allows us to experience true peace, as we align ourselves with divine principles and foster genuine connections with others. Remember, God's love thrives in honesty, empowering us to live authentically and without fear of exposure.
Application:
- If you feel hesitant to share something with a godly mentor, it may not be from God. This hesitation often stems from fear of judgment or misunderstanding, which can cloud one’s judgment and prevent the unfolding of divine wisdom. Thus, it is important to discern whether these feelings originate from genuine concerns or perhaps from a more worldly influence.
- A decision from God can stand in the light—it does not require secrecy, for it is meant to be shared and understood by all who seek truth and wisdom in their lives, encouraging openness and faith among those who believe.

III. It’s Not from God When You Have to Lie (Colossians 3:9, Proverbs 12:22)
Colossians 3:9 – “Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices.”
Proverbs 12:22 – “The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in people who are trustworthy.”
God is a God of truth, embodying the very essence of honesty and integrity. Anything that requires deception—even a “small” lie—is not from God and serves to distance us from His divine presence. When faced with a moral decision, if a choice requires you to manipulate, mislead, or deceive, then it is undoubtedly outside of His will and purpose for our lives. Embracing truth not only aligns us with God’s nature but also fosters genuine relationships and personal growth, leading us toward a path of righteousness and enlightenment in every aspect of our journey.

- Truth is a non-negotiable for God’s people. If you must lie to get something, it is not from Him. In every situation, honesty upholds integrity and reflects the character of God. Embracing truth not only strengthens our faith but also builds trust within our communities, ensuring that our relationships are grounded in sincerity and respect.
- A God-given opportunity does not require dishonesty, nor does it thrive on deception or unethical practices; instead, it flourishes when pursued with integrity and authenticity in all our endeavors.
IV. It’s Not from God When It’s Full of Confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33, James 3:16-17)
1 Corinthians 14:33 – “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.”
James 3:16-17 – “For where you have envy and selfiCsh ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”
God’s wisdom brings clarity, not chaos. If something creates constant confusion, inner turmoil, and disorder, it is a sign that it is not from God. True divine insight offers a sense of peace and direction, guiding us towards a path of understanding and harmony. When faced with decisions or challenges, we should seek the light of God’s wisdom, which illuminates our thoughts and helps us discern righteousness from turmoil. Remember, the absence of peace is often an indication of a misguided path, one that strays away from the divine purpose and leaves us in a state of unrest.

- A God-given decision brings peace and clarity, not persistent doubt and turmoil; it lays a firm foundation that allows us to move forward with confidence, nurturing a sense of purpose and direction in our lives, while also creating a tranquil space for reflection and growth.
- If confusion increases the more you pursue something, it is essential to stop and take a moment to reflect. This pause is not just a break but a necessary step in your journey. Seek God’s wisdom through prayer and meditation, as these practices can provide deep insights and guidance. Allowing yourself the time to find clarity and understanding is crucial; only then can you continue on your path with renewed strength and certainty, equipped with the awareness that comes from contemplation and spiritual connection.
V. It’s Not from God When You Have to Rush (Isaiah 40:31, Proverbs 19:2)
Isaiah 40:31 – “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”
Proverbs 19:2 – “Desire without knowledge is not good—how much more will hasty feet miss the way!”
God does not rush us into panic-driven decisions. When something pressures you to act immediately without time to pray or seek wisdom, it is often not from God. True guidance comes from a place of peace and clarity, encouraging you to reflect and weigh your options thoughtfully. In moments of uncertainty, taking a step back can reveal the path that aligns with your faith and purpose. Always remember, divine insight may take time, and it is in the stillness where we often hear the most profound truths. Therefore, resist the urge to hastily respond to the demands of the moment, for such urgency can lead to choices that do not reflect your highest values or the teachings of your faith.
Application:
- If someone tells you, “You must decide now!”, be cautious. God’s guidance allows time for wisdom and confirmation, encouraging thoughtful reflection rather than hasty choices that may lead to regret. It is essential to weigh your options carefully and seek clarity before making significant decisions, understanding that patience often brings deeper insights and a more profound sense of peace in your discernment process.
- God’s timing includes peace, not panic; it is a gentle reminder that we should trust the process and embrace the serenity that comes with waiting for the right moment.
VI. It’s Not from God If It Makes You Compromise Your Integrity (Daniel 1:8, Matthew 16:26)
Daniel 1:8 – “But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine.”
Matthew 16:26 – “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”
Any decision that requires you to compromise your values, integrity, or convictions is not from God. When faced with choices in life, it’s crucial to remember that our beliefs should guide us. If pursuing an opportunity means sacrificing your faithfulness to Christ, it is not His will. True guidance comes from God, and He encourages us to uphold our principles even in challenging situations. The importance of maintaining our commitment to His teachings cannot be overstated, as they shape our character and purpose. In times of uncertainty, seeking His wisdom will unerringly direct us away from paths that may lead us to abandon what we hold dear.

- If an opportunity looks good but requires compromising integrity, it is a trap and should be approached with caution, as succumbing to such temptations can lead to long-term consequences that ultimately undermine one’s values and principles.
- God’s blessings do not require sacrificing your character; rather, they often come as a reward for maintaining integrity, honesty, and moral fortitude in the face of challenges and temptations.
VII. It’s Not from God If It Pulls You Away from Jesus (John 15:5, Hebrews 12:1-2)
John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.”
Hebrews 12:1-2 – “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus.”
If a decision, relationship, job, or opportunity weakens your faith, takes you away from prayer and Scripture, or shifts your focus from Christ, it is not from God. Always remember that genuine paths illuminated by divine guidance will encourage spiritual growth, deepen your understanding of His Word, and cultivate an environment where prayer flourishes. Anything that detracts from your relationship with God, distracts you from His teachings, or leads you into a life of uncertainty and doubt is a clear indication that it does not align with His purpose for you. It is essential to remain vigilant and discerning, ensuring that your choices reflect a commitment to nurturing your faith rather than compromising it.
Application:
- God’s will always leads us closer to Jesus, not further from Him, guiding our paths and illuminating the way through challenges, reminding us of His unwavering love and the importance of faith in our daily lives.
- If something is taking your time, passion, or devotion away from Christ, reconsider it with a deep sense of reflection and consider the impact it has on your spiritual journey and relationship with Him.
Conclusion: How to Know It’s from God
Instead of guessing whether something is from God, we can filter it through these seven tests:
- Does it align with Scripture? If not, it is not from God.
- Can you be open about it? If you have to hide it, it is not from God.
- Does it require lying? If so, it is not from God.
- Does it create constant confusion? If so, it is not from God.
- Are you being pressured to rush? If so, it is not from God.
- Does it compromise your integrity? If so, it is not from God.
- Does it pull you away from Jesus? If so, it is not from God.
Final Challenge:
- Use these principles in your daily life to discern God’s will.
- Be patient and seek God before making big decisions.
- Trust that if you sincerely seek God, He will guide you in the right way (Proverbs 3:5-6).
